He’s an incredible raconteur, but not an actor.
I think that’s why, as it went along and he started being the star of his own movies, he became a lot less respected cos you can’t differentiate the guy delivering the good film making from the performer who is hamming it up too much if they are the same guy. I read a review of a Mel Brooks film, I forget which one, but it was something like: Mel Brooks the writer delivers brilliant material that Mel Brooks the actor keeps ruining”.
